Japan Camera Hunter, often known simply as JCH, was founded by British expat Bellamy Hunt in 2011, based in Tokyo, Japan, where Hunt has lived for many years. What began as a well-known camera-sourcing service and blog grew into a small brand with its own products, run by a compact team.
JCH's flagship film, StreetPan 400, revives a formulation with roots in a discontinued Agfa-lineage surveillance and aerial photography film, understood within the film photography community to be produced today via the ORWO/Filmotec manufacturing lineage in Germany. JCH describes it as an old, discontinued surveillance film put back into production specifically for the brand, making it a curated revival rather than an in-house manufactured product.
JCH StreetPan 400 is a panchromatic black and white film with sensitivity extending into the near-infrared range, nominally rated at ISO 400 but flexible from around 200 to 500. Its two-layer emulsion on a polyester base delivers fine grain and low fog, with a gelatin anti-scratch backing. Originally launched in 35mm, it has since also been made available in 120 format. JCH also sells its own disposable camera alongside film photography accessories and apparel.
StreetPan 400's extended red and near-infrared sensitivity makes it particularly effective for street photography, giving skies and foliage a distinctive, slightly haze-cutting look. It's a strong choice for documentary and street photographers wanting something a little different from standard black and white film. Compare Japan Camera Hunter film prices on Filmproof.
