About Kosmo Foto

The Story of Kosmo Foto

Kosmo Foto was founded by Stephen Dowling, a journalist with more than thirty years' experience, who started Kosmo Foto as a film photography blog after roughly a decade shooting Soviet-era cameras such as the Lomo LC-A and FED. The blog's strong editorial voice and Cold War-inspired aesthetic came first, with film products following later.

Kosmo Foto Mono is openly produced by Foma, the Czech manufacturer, rebranded under the Kosmo Foto name, a practice common across the industry and one Dowling has been transparent about when asked. This makes Kosmo Foto a curated brand built on an established manufacturer's film rather than an in-house coated product, with its value coming from strong branding, storytelling and a distinctive visual identity rather than original manufacturing.

Kosmo Foto's Camera Film Ranges

Kosmo Foto Mono 100 is a black and white film rated at ISO 100, sold in 35mm with distinctive Cold War and Soviet-art-inspired packaging. Kosmo Foto Agent Shadow 400 is a faster black and white film, rated at ISO 400 and pushable up to ISO 6400, launched via Kickstarter in 2021 with film-noir-themed branding and an accompanying comic, aimed at photographers who enjoy strong visual storytelling alongside their film.

Choosing the Right Kosmo Foto Film

For everyday black and white shooting with a strong dose of retro style, Kosmo Foto Mono 100 is the natural choice in good light. For low light, fast action or dramatic, high-contrast noir-style images, Agent Shadow 400 is built for exactly that, with plenty of room to push further. Compare Kosmo Foto film prices on Filmproof.
